WHO Raises Concern Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Medications

Less than one in 10 individuals that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it releases its first advice on the therapies.

Considering over a billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and ongoing treatment," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to broad availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, notes the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even under the present most favorable case, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the WHO.

The guideline calls on countries and companies to increase availability, through measures including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

These medications imitate a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance feelings of fullness so users consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Studies indicates users may see weight return within a year of stopping the treatment, when their usual hunger return.

To be carrying excess weight raises your risk for developing medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
