Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
