Mystery Pink Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Prompts Concerns of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers worried it could be an algae outbreak.

Broad Presence Along Shore

The pink-tinged sludge was found on a section of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the capital. A like substance has also been noted on areas of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Specimens Gathered for Analysis

Samples have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for examination. A spokesperson stated that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in minerals, temperature, precipitation or light".

"They are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the official said. "Few algae outbreaks are toxic, with numerous types acting as a primary source of food for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The most common cause of reddish water in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."

Growing Rate Associated with Environmental Shifts

Algae outbreaks are natural events but their frequency has increased in recent years, partially due to global warming and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disrupts the normal functioning of ecosystems.

These occurrences have been equated with subsurface wildfires and can persist in growing as long as the environment is suitable. In worse situations, sensitive marine ecosystems can be destroyed as aquatic animals is eliminated or suffocated, offering more minerals for the outbreak.

Past Devastating Outbreak in another region

Another region in the past dealt with a devastating algal bloom along its southern coastline after a succession of oceanic warm spells, which spread across a vast area. The outbreak caused beachgoers with eye irritation and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across 400 different species, according to official estimates.

Scientist Opinion on the Current Case

A marine expert, who assisted in examining the beginning of South Australia's algal bloom commented, based on photos of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

"There have been many of these events around the island of late," she added.

Coleman explained this organism did not generate poisons like the type involved in that harmful algal bloom, but it does consume tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were most at risk.

"You usually see a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.

Calls for Action and Safety Concerns

A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it looked like the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, citing like situations overseas.

"Therefore Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the authorities and the regulators need to act to this. We need to analyse the examples we've gathered and we need to notify the public here," she stated.

She stated she had worries for people's well-being after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.

Reports of Deceased Sea Creatures and Calls for Government Intervention

An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the situation as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the local leader to see and "assume command the response that authorities must be making".

"Officials needs to know this is a disaster in the making, economically as well as environmentally."

Addressing the media, the premier stated he was not aware of any connections between the algal bloom and the farming business, saying expert examination was necessary before determinations could be made.

"We must make certain our aquatic environments are safe for nature and sustainable," he said.

"Our coastal assets across Tasmania are our resources and we need to guarantee the community and our industry can coexist to utilize our waterways productively and in a lasting way."
